Artifact: Journal of Design Practice / WEBSITE

Artifact is an international research journal about design. It targets the international design research community in an attempt at increasing knowledge sharing. Thus, Artifact is a platform for profiling design research. Artifact is mainly focused on design conceived in the technological and digitized world. The contributions to Artifact come from researchers in Denmark as well as the rest of the world, and the articles are carefully vetted according to common peer review criteria. Thus, the research articles are reviewed by at least two peers from different countries. The design profession has one foot in the practice field and one foot in theory. Artifact should reflect this fact. Artifact publishes academic articles, short research notes, review articles, and essays. Academic articles and research notes are vetted in a double-blind review process. We send out several calls for contributions each year. In addition, we welcome unsolicited contributions.

Design and Culture / WEBSITE

Design and Culture examines contemporary “design,” broadly conceived, as a cultural phenomenon and in historical perspective. Covering a field that is increasingly interdisciplinary, Design and Culture probes design’s relation to other academic disciplines—including marketing, management, cultural studies, anthropology, material culture, geography, visual culture, and political economy—seeking rigorous and innovative critical frameworks with which to better understand the social, economic, and cultural forces shaping, and shaped by, design. Articles analyze a broad range of contemporary design artifacts, as well as current discourse about, and representations of, the field of design. As a forum for critique, each issue of the journal includes a substantial reviews section. The journal is peer-reviewed and features full-color illustrations throughout.

DISEÑA / WEBSITE

Diseña promotes research in all areas of design. Its specific aim is to promote critical thought about methodologies, methods, practices, and tools of research and project work. Under the assumption that design research methods and techniques not only describe realities “out there”, but also contribute to the elaboration of forms of reality, Diseña is interested in research that explores new methodological repertoires that respond to the needs and dimensions of a social world in constant transformation. For the journal is especially relevant the thought produced in Latin America. In general terms, those contributions that challenge the methodological limits of design, particularly those that conceive design as a tool for critical analysis and knowledge production, are of interest

Fashion Theory. The Journal of Dress, Body and Culture / WEBSITE

Fashion Theory takes as its starting point a definition of “fashion” as the cultural construction of the embodied identity. The importance of studying the body as a site for the deployment of discourses is well-established in a number of disciplines. By contrast, the study of fashion has, until recently, suffered from a lack of critical analysis. Increasingly, however, scholars have recognized the cultural significance of self-fashioning, including not only clothing but also such body alterations as tattooing and piercing. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for the rigorous analysis of cultural phenomena ranging from footbinding to fashion advertising.

Formal Methods in System Design / WEBSITE

The focus of this journal is on formal methods for designing, implementing, and validating the correctness of hardware (VLSI) and software systems. The stimulus for starting a journal with this goal came from both academia and industry. In both areas, interest in the use of formal methods has increased rapidly during the past few years. The enormous cost and time required to validate new designs has led to the realization that more powerful techniques must be developed. A number of techniques and tools are currently being devised for improving the reliability, and robustness of complex hardware and software systems. While the boundary between the (sub)components of a system that are cast in hardware, firmware, or software continues to blur, the relevant design disciplines and formal methods are maturing rapidly. Consequently, an important (and useful) collection of commonly applicable formal methods are expected to emerge that will strongly influence future design environments and design methods. The journal is an international forum for the dissemination of research related to the application and development of formal methods in both hardware (VLSI) and software system design. Papers describing original work in all aspects of formal methods as they relate to this general area are invited.

Information Design Journal / WEBSITE

Information Design Journal (IDJ) is a peer-reviewed international journal that bridges the gap between research and practice in information design. IDJ is a platform for discussing and improving the design, usability, and overall effectiveness of ‘content put into form’ — of verbal and visual messages shaped to meet the needs of particular audiences. IDJ offers a forum for sharing ideas about the verbal, visual, and typographic design of print and online documents, multimedia presentations, illustrations, signage, interfaces, maps, quantitative displays, websites, and new media. IDJ brings together ways of thinking about creating effective communications for use in contexts such as workplaces, hospitals, airports, banks, schools, or government agencies. On the one hand, IDJ explores the design of information, with a focus on writing, the visual design, structure, format, and style of communications. On the other hand, IDJ seeks to better understand the ways that people understand, interpret, and use communications, with a focus on audiences, cultural differences, readers’ expectations, and differences between populations such as teenagers, elderly or the blind. IDJ publishes research papers, case studies, critiques of information design and related theory, reviews of current literature, research-in-progress, interviews with thought leaders, discussions of practical problems, book reviews, and conference information. Contributions should be relevant to a multi-disciplinary audience from fields such as: communication design, writing, typography, discourse studies, applied linguistics, rhetoric, usability research, instructional design and graphic design. Contributions should be based on appropriate evidence and make clear their implications for practice.
